Why backing up your data is important

The purpose of backing up data is to create a copy of your information so that you can restore it from a backup if there is data failure.  There are several reasons why this might occur, and it could be that you have been subjected to a malicious attack, a hardware or software failure or a human error.

If you have backed up your data, then you can restore your information and continue to operate as an organisation, ensuring that your customers have access to your services.

It is essential to realise that your backup is at a point in time, and therefore, you need to understand how much data you are willing to put at risk of losing forever.  It would be best to consider how you back up your data; it needs to be in a secure location and tested regularly.  You don’t want to be subjected to a malicious attack and find out that your backup data has also been affected or is corrupt.

Lastly, most organisations believe that if they have a cloud solution, their data is backed up automatically.  We would recommend that you check your Terms and Conditions. Not all cloud services providers have backup services as part of their standard offering, and that is an additional service.
